Intern Blog Series: The Golden Rule

America is a great nation that has been corrupted by the notion that there are only two ways to look at an issue, as a republican or as a democrat. Our founding fathers warned us of the detriment that would follow when we split into parties, yet we have chosen to do so anyway. The problem with this is that we have become a country that is more loyal to our parties than to our fellow human beings. There are so many issues that could be less aggressively discussed if we could all just put the interests of the masses before the interests of ourselves. With the recent refugee ban, there has been a societal pressure to choose a partisan side on the issue; however, I implore you, to instead chose your fellow man. Put politics aside and think back to kindergarten, where there was one rule that everyone was expected to follow: The Golden Rule “treat others as you would have them treat you”. I urge you to remember this simple rule when considering any social issue. How would you feel if you and your family were on the end that needed a hand and the people who were more than capable of helping you, simply chose not to? The golden rule was pounded into our heads as children, but somewhere along the way, we all seem to have brushed it aside. Whether or not you agree with the ban is not the issue, but your reasons for doing so or not are the issue. I’m not trying to shame you or get you to switch your position, but instead to consider your motivations for believing what you do. At the end of the day, what you believe in or do not believe in, is your right and that is one of the greatest things about this country. Cieria]]>
